As clean technologies are sweeping across all industries and opening opportunities for sustainable development, it is well known that certain industries, such as energy, are dominated by men. How are women professionals gaining ground in this field and what challenges must be overcome to achieve greater equality of opportunity?

Panel Two: Smart City and Minority Social Inclusion.

Besides the pollution caused by heavy industries, cities can drive a new social paradigm in which sustainability is the engine. The concept of smart and sustainable cities is becoming more prevalent, and every city is vying for the best benefits. While this is true, there is still a gap between low-income individuals and wealthy individuals when it comes to access to smart cities, first across countries, then down to social classes.

In some economies, the EV revolution has been a dominant force in the last decade. Others are more nuanced, placing clean fuels at the top of their transition to a carbon-free transportation policy, such as green hydrogen, efuels, and biofuels. A comparison of zero carbon goals with actual performance in the industry, as well as how different stakeholders approach sustainability. A look at how government incentives and law changes are influencing local changes.

Meghan Nutting is the Executive Vice President of Government and Regulatory Affairs at Sunnova Energy Corporation, a leading U.S. residential solar and storage services provider. In this role, she works closely with company and industry leaders, nonprofits, state and federal policymakers, and regulators to craft and implement policies that provide a more stable and sustainable business environment for solar electricity generation. Prior to working at Sunnova, she served as the Director of Policy and Electricity Markets at SolarCity for nearly five years. She has also worked as a Legislative Director for New York State Assembly member Linda Rosenthal and as a Press Secretary for former U.S. Senator Olympia Snowe. Meghan has held policy positions at the World Bank and the British Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs as well as a number of environmental organizations. In these positions, Meghan has worked on, advocated for, and impacted a significant number of energy and environment-related issues and policies. She has been named one of the #Solar100 thought leaders in the U.S. and one of the Denver Business Journal’s top women in energy for 2018 and top women in business in 2021. She was also a 2021 C3E award winner in the business category. She was a candidate for the Colorado House of Representatives in 2017-18. Meghan received her BA in Biology from Cornell University and her MPA from Princeton University.

Aanchal Kumar serves as Peak Power's Director of Corporate Development and Strategy. In addition to being a Future Energy Leader with the World Energy Council, she has worked for more than 10 years implementing energy efficiency and electric mobility projects in India as well as facilitating the development of decarbonization pathways in Canada. Aanchal Kumar is currently working on converting buildings from static consumers to dynamic producers.

Antoine Maurice Thompson is a native of Buffalo, New York. He graduated from Buffalo Public Schools #61, #60, and Bennett High School. A graduate of SUNY Brockport with a dual bachelors’ degree in History and African and Afro-American Studies, Thompson also studied at the University of Ghana in Ghana, West Africa. Antoine is the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Laws Degree from Medaille College. He is a graduate of the 2001 Class of Leadership Buffalo. Antoine M. Thompson is a nationally recognized leader for environmental justice, green business, housing, diversity, and urban policy. Antoine is the Executive Director of the Greater Washington Region Clean Cities Coalition (GWRCC), a public-private partnership that promotes the use of clean, American transportation fuels for homeland security, improved air quality, environment justice, diversity, and inclusion. He is the former Executive Director of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) the oldest organization of African American real estate professionals in the United States. Antoine led efforts to increase advocacy on Capitol Hill on closing the racial wealth gap through increasing the rate of Black homeownership. He had a significant public service career in his hometown of Buffalo, New York. His positions have included election to Buffalo Common Council where he authored the Buffalo’s Fair Housing Law, the Minority and Women Business Enterprise Inclusion Law and secured over $75 million for community development projects. He was elected to the New York State Senate in 2006 and 2008 and served as the Senate Deputy Majority Whip and the first African American to Chair the Senate Standing Committee on Environmental Conservation and Co-Chair of the Senate Minority and Woman Business Enterprise Task Force. He authored the NYS MWBE Mentor/Protégé Law. He was key architect of the Green Jobs/Green New York law.

Now, she leads the Alliance for Electric School Buses, a national coalition of non-profit organizations committed to electrifying the nation's school bus fleet, starting in the communities most harmed by air pollution and creating good U.S. jobs.
